The Difference Between Autism and Aspergers

Over the years, society has referred to individuals who show patterns of social behavior and communication that don’t fit the so-called normal parameters as autistic. But not all autistic individuals exhibit the same signs or experience the symptoms to the same degree. The autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is broad and includes different diagnoses, including autism and Asperger’s disorder.

With both under the same umbrella, they’re often confused with one another. Aspies may exhibit many communication and behavioral patterns as autistic people. But what separates the two is their differences between language delay, IQ, age of diagnosis, and brain wiring and shape.

Read on to find out the unique characteristics of autism disorder and Aspergers and the intervention available to those diagnosed.

What’s the Difference Between Autism and Aspergers?

An early distinguishing factor between autism and Aspergers is that autistic individuals tend to start talking later in life and often seem aloof. People who have Aspergers, on the other hand, typically don’t experience a language delay. They usually want to interact with other people but find it difficult to do so and may come off as socially awkward.

Those with Aspergers also have an average to high or very high intelligence, while people with autism usually have a below-average IQ. Some Aspies may exhibit advanced vocabulary and even talents in a wide range of fields. For instance, they may be “gifted” in arts or show great skill in memorizing important historical dates. Although this is usually the case, many also have behavioral problems that can hold them back academically.

Because of the delayed language development and difficulty in learning things, kids who have autism are often diagnosed earlier than those with Aspergers. According to Autism Speaks, the average age of diagnosis for children with autism disorder is age 4, but they can be diagnosed as early as 2-years-old. Since Aspies typically don’t show language delays or have lower IQs, parents may not realize their child has it until they start interacting with their peers.

One study also suggested that while Asperger’s syndrome belongs within ASP, people with Aspergers display different patterns of activity. Another research found that the region of the brain that controls language contains more folds in individuals with autism than those with Aspergers. While these reports offer clues on how the brains of those diagnosed with autism and Aspergers differ, additional studies are required to reveal more information.

Do Treatment and Intervention Options Differ From Autism and Aspergers?

Since 2013, Aspergers and autism disorder are no longer considered separate diagnoses. As mentioned earlier, they’re now diagnosed under the umbrella of ASD, making treatment options similar. While treatment has been reported to cure ASD, both kids and adults may benefit from therapies and interventions.

These treatment options include psychological or behavioral therapy, medications, dietary modifications or supplements, social skills training, and complementary therapies. Keep in mind that every kid and adult with autism or Aspergers is unique. That’s why the treatment plan is always individualized to meet the specific needs of a person.

Takeaway

Although both diagnoses fall under the autism spectrum disorder, there are some apparent differences between the term Aspergers and what’s considered autism. But sometimes, the signs of autism disorder and Aspergers overlap, making it hard to distinguish the two. Whether you or a loved one is exhibiting signs of ASD, it’s crucial to seek consultation and receive immediate intervention.
