The translation business is booming as many companies go global. However, just like any other industry, it won’t be able to stay for long if it won’t innovate and adapt to its constant ever-evolving trends. Thankfully, in this day and age, most of these trends are technology-driven, something that most of us have been working towards the most prominent trends of 2020 for many years.

However, you should also not think that we are bound by the trends inside the translation industry’s four corners. As a matter of fact, you should consider your client’s industry and the trends affecting them --- and remember to stay on top of them as well.

Here are the top three trends for the translation industry in 2020:

1. AI or Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed and elevated the game of various industries over the years. This same thing is also seen to change the translation industry. In fact, you might have already seen an AI translation in action, already visibly working on your Facebook feeds and international Google search.

Furthermore, Microsoft has already recently developed its very own translator application. I’m pretty sure that you won’t believe that aside from translating texts, it can also do that to speech, images, and street signs. Moreover, it can also work without an internet connection, which is ideal for those traveling in areas with limited connectivity. Indeed, this is a significant breakthrough in the translation industry!

2. Transcreation

Transcreation is the process of getting the original intention of a company’s marketing materials and conveying it to a new target market. Doing this involves more than just translation but also imagery and iconography.

As marketing trends are growing, it also evolves with the digital industry. Consumers are now changing the way they shop and engage with brands. Furthermore, they place the utmost importance on ethical and ecological considerations. This is why you should expect a rise in the demand for transcreation services as it will become a part of the overall marketing translation niche.

3. Post-Editing Machine Translation

The newest automation trend in the translation business this 2020 is the Post-Editing Machine Translation or PEMT. This is an attractive investment for many because of its speed and affordable price without compromising the quality of translated works.

There has been evidence suggesting that it is better to rely on translation machines and then moving it up to a PEMT service than to do all the translation work manually, which generally costs more and takes too long to finish.

According to research done by the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and Dublin City University in Ireland, PEMT services on a group of translators working on statistical machine translation increased productivity by 18%. It increased productivity by 36% for the neural machine translation group, which scored higher productivity results than when doing a manual translation.

Also, in both groups using PEMT, translators focused more on their work and were taking less time on their breaks than when translating from scratch.

There were 29% of the statistical machine translation group who took fewer breaks on their work, and there were 42% of the neural machine translation group who have also done so.

Global language services have never been more critical when it comes to connecting businesses and individuals from a wide variety of linguistic backgrounds. For individual companies, high-quality translation ensures the opportunity to attract more customers and expand their footprint. For the business world as a whole, translation provides the capacity for entire countries to trade efficiently and successfully.
